Not sure what your weighing scale is telling you? The Body MassIndex (BMI) helps you compare your height to your weight and gives you an indication of whether you are overweight, underweight or at optimum weight.

Here's how it's done:
What you need: a weighing scale, measuring tape, calculator, pen and paper
1. Measure your weight in kilograms
2.Work out your height in centimetres
3.Divide your height in centimeters by 100 to get your height in metres
4.Multiply your height in metres by the figure itself
5.Divide your weight in kilograms by the total obtained in step 4. This is your BMI.
For example if you are 5ft 4in and weigh 60 kgs, then your height in cms is 163, and your height in metres is 1.63. If you multiply 1.63 by 1.63, you get 2.65. Divide your weight (in kgs) by 2.65, and you will get: 22.6.
What it means:
BMI of less than 18 means you are under weight.
A BMI of less than 18.5 indicates you are thin.
BMI between 18.6 and 24.9 indicates you are at a healthy weight.
BMI between 25 and 29.9 suggests you are overweight.
BMI of 30 or over indicates obesity.
Note: BMI will vary slightly according to gender. BMI alone is not the best indicator for who is most at risk of obesity and cardiovascular disease. Waist circumference is a more accurate indicator of future health problems.

Active! lets you in on sure-fire ways to boost energy levels in the workplace
It's hard to beat the urge to collapse into the nearest sofa when the mid-afternoon slump threatens to take over. Overcome post-lunch drowsiness with these practical tips and, no, none of them involve keeping your eyelids open with toothpicks!'

Get a head start
Avoid waking up late and scrambling to work. Instead, go to bed early, wake up early, and at the same time each day. On waking up, immediately try and expose yourself to sunlight. This will help the circadian rhythms of your body, which are regulated by yourmaster body clock, and in turn keep you energised through the day.
Drink lots of water
How many of us really drink as much water as we need to? Drinking too many fizzy and sugary drinks can lead to bloating, and eventual fluctuations in insulin levels, which contribute to feelings of lethargy. Close substitutes for water are fruits with a high water concentration, like watermelon and muskmelon.
Watch what you eat
What you eat at lunch will have a huge impact on how badly you want to take an afternoon nap. Avoid fast foods andprocessed foods, which are packed with fats and preservatives. It will only bring you down in the afternoon. Also avoid dessert, as sugar and flour are energy slump inducers. Stick to eating low-carb, high-protein food, which include sprouts, green veggies like avocados, cucumbers, broccoli and beans . Nuts, soyabeans and whole grains are also good.
Drink coffee through the day
The trick to getting the most out of a caffeine rush is by drinking less coffee in the morning, and over a longer period of time. According to James K Wyatt, PhD, Director of the Sleep Disorders Service and Research Center at Rush University Medical Center, drinking coffee in the afternoon will not only give you energy, but it will also block adenosine, a chemical in the brain that induces drowsiness and often accumulates in the afternoon.
Take a walk
According to research a 15 to 20 minute walk just when the eyelids are letting you down, can boost energy levels instanelt. Low-impact exercise can curb fatigue levels. So even if that means walking around the office corridor or around cubicles, as that famous tagline goes, just do it.

Keen to cut the emotional clutter from your life? Meditation might be the key?
Meditation is one of the best ways to bust stress, according to experts. So, if stress has been eating away at you lately and you're keen to bite back then, get started with our nine-step meditation plan for beginners. The best part? You don't need to sit cross-legged on a hillock to achieve a few minutes
of bliss.

>> 1. Sit comfortably in a chair with your feet planted firmly on the ground and your back straight. If you need to close your eyes to relax, then pick a point in the dark and make that your focal point.
>> 2. Relax your neck by gently moving your head in small circles, backwards and forwards, front to back, and from side to side.
>> 3. Roll your shoulders a few times to relax further.
>> 4. Stretch out your legs if you like, and then align them again.
>> 5. Focus on one area of your body and concentrate on relaxing that area. Start with your feet, then move up to your calves, knees, thighs, stomach, torso, and to your neck, throat, and finally head.
>> 6.Release any tight or sore area/s in your body. Do this by breathing into those areas two or three times.
>> 7. Focus on your breath. Notice each inhalation and exhalation. Slowly, as your breathing gets deeper, count to four for each inhalation and another four for every exhalation.
>> 8. If you feel distracted by ambient sounds or a distracting thought or image, acknowledge it, and thenrelease the distracting though it by focusing more intently on your breath.
To begin with, set aside just three minutes every day at a specific time (early in the morning or post lunch at the office) to meditate. Over time, and with practice, incorporating meditation into your life will become a habit, and you can then slowly increase the duration of your meditationsessions .

Pregnancy is not easy, especially with hormones going awry and emotions running high. Active! speaks to the experts to find out what to expect, when you're expecting
Singer Pink recently startled shoppers when she lost her temper at a fellow shopper, who kept honking at her while she was parking. "I wanted to kill him," she reportedly said, "and the poor bag boy looked like he wanted to be invisible."

Anger managementclasses , you say? Well it all falls into perspective when you realise that Pink is battling pregnancy-related mood swings. Unlike in the movies , pregnancy is not all about food cravings and pampering. Swollen feet, rashes, constipation. The list is pretty long. Here's the lowdown on things that they don't tell you about getting pregnant.
Truth 1 : There will be mood swings
Imagine PMS and then multiply it hundred fold. That's the kind of mood swings we're talking about. And no, its not the world, but the high levels of estrogen, which the body produces to maintain pregnancy, are at blame. Dr Sonal Kumta, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at The Fortis Hospitals, says, "Pregnancy is a phase of intense hormonal changes in a woman's body. This can make her emotionally instable, she may be irritable, irrational, weep a lot and be excessively happy too."
What to do: There's nothing like a hot cup of TLC. Handle yourself with care, pamper yourself with good food and all that you like and just sit back and let the world gush over you.
Truth 2 : Your breasts will change
Don't be surprised if you're bra size changes during pregnancy. Also, be prepared for increased tenderness and darker nipples. "During pregnancy, the breasts are preparing to lactate, hence the changes. At that time, breasts can be painful to touch or press. Many a times one can secrete milk as early as four months," says Dr. Sudeshna Ray, gynaecologist, Jaslok Hospital.
What to do: Make sure you wear the right cup size, to preventsagging breasts later on.
Truth 3 : You're going to get stretch marks
Bring out your moisturizers and massage oils. This is one every expectant mother's nightmare. "Stretch marks in pregnancy are inevitable. The skin stretches rapidly in a short period of time, causing bluish lines, which eventually turn white. They are more prominent around the stomach, upper chest and hips," says Dr.
Satish Wadhwa, dermatologist, Breach Candy Hospital. "Some women also suffer from pigmentation, especially on the face and private parts. This is especially common in first time mothers. Some women may also develop severe rashes, but that goes away as soon as the baby is born," he adds.
What to do: "Stretch marks are something you just have to put up with," says Dr. Wadhwa. "You can apply oil or creams before they appear, but they will remain nonetheless." Pigmentation will eventually wear off after pregnancy. "Stay out of the sun and use a sunscreen," advises Dr Wadhwa.

Truth 4 : You will throw up
"The term morning sickness is a misnomer. It can occur at any time of the day and is also called simple vomiting of pregnancy," says Dr Kumta. " This happens as a result of increased levels of hormones of pregnancy and usually subsides by the 4th month. Heightened sense of smell is a part of morning sickness." "Vomitting 3-4 times a day is considered normal, but watch out for drastic weight loss, excessive salivation and thirst," warns Dr. Ray.
What to do: "Eat a high protein diet, plenty of fluids, prenatal vitamin supplements, avoid sight, smell, taste of foods that make you queasy, eat often and don't force yourself to eat what you don't feel like," advises Dr. Kumta.

Truth 5 : You will retain water
"Water retention is normal during pregnancy, as is the swelling of the feet, fingers and face. Usually, the swelling disappears during a nights rest, only to be back the next morning. The edema usually occurs due to hormonal changes, the weight of the womb which can stop blood supply to the calf and water retention," says Dr. Ray. "Edema is considered normal as long as there is no change in blood pressure."
What to do: "A hot water bath and massage usually do the trick. Lack of calcium can cause cramps, so take calcium supplements. Sometimes, Vitamin E and omega fatty acid supplements are also prescribed," says Dr Ray.
Truth 6 : Your libido will change
"Pregnancy is a time for change. Women with low sex drive may have an increase and others may find that they completely lack it," says Dr. Kumta. "The diminished sex drive is because of the high levels of progesterone, like the time when women P.M.S. There is also an inhibition and a fear attached to sex when pregnant. Women aren't comfortable with their bodies, but all these fears are irrational," says Dr Ray.
What to do: "Sex during pregnancy is not a problem, unless advised against by your doctor. Different positions that take the weight off the belly are safe. Sometimes, sex is also advised towards the latter stages of pregnancy to initiate labour," says Dr Ray. "Feelings are erratic during pregnancy," says Dr Kumta, "but there's nothing that mutual understanding cannot solve."
Truth 7 : Your bladder will act up
"Progesterone makes digestion slow, which leads to constipation and piles," says Dr Ray. "Also the pressure of the womb on the bladder means you will be running to the bathroom more often. There are times when you might pass a bit of urine when sneezing or laughing. This problem is not serious, and is seen in women who suffer from it regardless of pregnancy as well," she adds.
What to do: " A soft diet with lots of greens and fibre and plenty of fluids is the best way to prevent constipation. Go for a brisk walk and use a mild laxative, only after consulting a doctor. In terms of urination, reassurance helps. It will all be okay after delivery," says Dr. Kumta.
What pregnancy means for the dad
Pregnancy means fathers-to-be are running around, pampering their wives and fulfilling their every whim. Dr Dilip Raja, andrologist, insists that while there are no physical implications of fatherhood, it brings with it huge responsibility and lifestyle changes.
"There is a sense of excitement and anxiousness, especially for first-time fathers. Stress levels are high. Many a times, men get isolated during and after the pregnancy. It is crucial that both partners understand and support each other." And then again, pregnancy also affects the couple's sex life. "For a long time, intimacy is less. Women lose their desire, or are uncomfortable with their bodies.
One can try different positions, but in the long run, this is where maturity comes in. Also, you are now more home bound. It all comes down to the equation and understanding between the couple," he says.
And now for the good news...Women around the globe have voted giving birth as the most beautiful experience in their lives. Dr Ray echoes the sentiment. "Being able to conceive and give birth is an immensely satisfying feeling. The most important thing is that you're creating and maintaining a new life.
Besides, being pregnant, giving birth and breastfeeding significantly reduces the risk of breast and ovarian cancer." High levels of estrogen during pregnancy add a radiant glow to the skin. "It's a beginning of a new life," says Dr Kumta. "The glow is not only thanks to the estrogen, but also reflects the positive state of being of the mother-to-be."

Actress and Bigg Boss inmate, Veena Malik, stands tall in her 5 inch stilettos, but aping her and wearing them 24/7 may result in some serious problems, including Knee osteoarthritis, Ankle Sprain and Bone Surgery, warn Orthopaedic surgeons
Fashionistas may swear by heels, putting up with leg cramps, ankle strain and foot aches, considering it a small price for looking glamorous, but orthopaedic surgeons across the city are slamming the habit, claiming it could cause serious leg problems in the long run. Advice that Bigg Boss inmate Veena Malik should probably heed, as she insists on wearing heels even while doing domestic chores.

The actor should take notes from Maharashtra top cop, D Sivanandan's wife Lalitha Sivanandan, who recently
survived a heels scare.
High hopes
Lalitha routinely opted for conservative tall platform shoes when accompanying her husband for all major socialfunctions , but had to pay the price for it by putting up with excruciating pain in her feet.
She said, "Last year at my daughter's wedding reception, I had to stand for more than three hours in my high heels. However, after a point, I could not take the pain and had to leave in the middle of the function,"
She adds that the pain persisted even after the wedding, and that she was unable to go for her morning walks.
Mobility consultant Chaitanya Shah of Orthofit, Kemps Corner, said, "Like all Indian women, Lalitha was also ignoring her feet."
He added, "I saw the pressure points that were activated when her feet touched the ground. When I placed an orthotic raise pad just before the pain region to avoid that area touching the ground it made her feel much better. I gave her Orthotic sandals for her casual and home use and Vasyli prefabricated custom Orthotic insoles for her sneakers to ensure that she did not experience any pain."
Happy feet
"After examining my feet, Chaitanya blamed my poor footwear for my problems. It was not that they were inexpensive, but they were inappropriate, he explained. I had no idea that my incorrect footwear was the reason for my problem," says Lalitha.
High on heels
Pakistani actress and model Veena Malik is head over heels in love with her stilettos. The Bigg Boss girl neatly lines them up in front of her bed, and spends most of the day in them.
4 ways to save your sole
Invest in good heelsBuy a good pair of shoes that support and give your feet room. Make sure your heels are in good condition and are not worn out. When buying heels, look for a rubber sole for better shock absorption and reasonable heel height (1 to 2 inches work best).
Invest in leather shoes Leather shoes last longer and conform better to your foot shape.
Stretch your legsWhenever you wear heels, try stretching exercises to avoid soreness at the end of the day.
Treat yourself to a foot rubFoot massages and pedicures can do wonders for tired feet. Even simply soaking your feet in warm water can help you feel much better.
Complications that can result from wearing heels:
According to mobility consultant Chaitanya Shah of Orthofit, women face several problems as a result of wearing high heels for long hours. These include:
Knee osteoarthritisA painful, degenerative joint disease characterised by the breakdown of the cartilage surrounding the knee. The Achilles tendon becomes shorter and tighter.
Ankle SprainIf a woman loses her balance, a sudden twist can sprain ligaments between bones.
Muscle imbalance, bone deformities, knee and ankle joint problems, bunions and hammer toes
Tightening of calf muscles
High heels prevent the back of leg from stretching, as a result the muscle may become shorter and tight over time.
Peripheral NeuropathyLack of sensation under the feet due to nerve damage.
