Dhobi Ghat

Dhobi GhatCast: Aamir Khan, Prateik Babbar, Monica Dogra, Kriti Malhotra

Director: Kiran Rao

Rating: ****

Every year literally hundreds of thousands throng to the city of dreams, Mumbai. To cover so many dreams in a small span of an-hour-and-a-half calls for some brilliant filmmaking. And watching "Dhobi Ghat" will make you realise that there indeed have been very few debuts as stunning as this one.

"Dhobi Ghat" is the story of five characters - Yasmin (Kirti Malhotra), Arun (Aamir Khan), Shai (Monica Dogra), Munna (Prateik Babbar) and the city of Mumbai. After a one night stand with Arun, who is a painter, Shai, an investment banker from America and an amateur photographer, obsesses over him, while her dhobi Munna pines for Shai.

Arun, meanwhile, discovers a few tapes in his flat from the previous tenant and, watching them, falls in love and find a muse in the woman who has made them - Yasmin.

Each of the character is thus looking for something in one another, while the fifth character, Mumbai, simply stares blankly at them without comment or prejudice.

One of the best things about the film is its casting. Each of the actors complement the film, its director, and the city of Mumbai perfectly.

Each is believable in his or her own garb. Prateik is bound to become the heartthrob of the generation, while Kirti Malhotra's innocence has to be seen to be believed.

Real life singer Monica brings out the uncertainty of her character beautifully.

The only one who is a little out of place, and hence the small sore point of the film is actor Aamir Khan. He begins shakily and is self conscious, unable as he is perhaps of shaking away two decades of Bollywood's acting baggage. By the end of it though, he manages to get into the film's rhythm and gives a believable performance.

It is hence not Kiran Rao's luck that she got superstar husband Aamir to act in the film, but Aamir's luck that he is in this film, which will go down in the history of cinema as one of the best character sketches of a city and its people.

Very few people in the world have sketched any city with such tender love, care and affection. And to add to the lilting melody that is Mumbai in the film is composer Gustavo Santaolalla who gives a haunting background score.

Director Kiran Rao brilliantly manages to find a physical representation of Mumbai city, in the old woman who blankly stares at all the characters, but says nothing. The metaphor is simple but powerful - Mumbai is a dying, decaying city, but one that is definitely alive and watches over all.

And like the character of Arun who becomes a voyeur into the life of Yasmin, it is Kiran Rao that has played voyeur on the city of Mumbai.

Another good thing about the film is that nowhere does it slacken or lose pace.

On the contrary, it unfolds almost like a mystery, like a rose bud, only to scintillate the senses in full bloom. It thus might become the low budget indie Indian film that will finally make money like big-budget Bollywood fare.

In the end though, that wouldn't matter much to the audience who will find themselves somewhere in the film. Each one of the characters in the film is like Mumbai, and Mumbai is like each one of us who inhabit it.

Aishwarya and Aamir Khan finally bury the hatchet

Aishwarya and Aamir Khan finally bury the hatchetBollywood superstar Aamir Khan has always maintained a respectable relationship with megastar Amitabh Bachchan but the same cannot be said with ‘Bachchan bahu’ Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

The face-off started when Ash abandoned Aamir Khan’s project Mangal Pandey at the last minute. At that time, Aamir called up his good friend Rani Mukerji, who finally appeared in the film.

However, they finally patched up after so many years and that happened at the 10th wedding anniversary of Akshay Kumar and his wife Twinkle. Ash and Aamir had a cold war, since these years but now they have settled the issues.

Usually, Ash does not stay in any party for more than 10 minutes but when she came to know that Aamir and Kiran Rao are on their way, the beauty queen waited for them to reach the party.

When the couple reached the party, Ash went forward and bonded with the actor like never before. They spoke warmly and discussed about Kiran’s upcoming movie Dhobi Ghat. After spending some time together, Aamir had to leave early. Soon after his exit, Ash also left the party.

A source from the party revealed that both were seen very comfortable with each other and it seemed that they have forgotten the bitter past and planned to move ahead with good will of each other.

Now, when the dup has settled their issues, can we expect any joint project in near future?

Secret is out: Genelia, Riteish seen getting bold at party

Secret is out: Genelia, Riteish seen getting bold at partyBollywood actors Ritiesh Deshmukh and Genelia D’Souza have finally come out bold and clear about their alleged relationship. According to the buzz, the great looking duo had gone to Akshay Kumar and Twinkle Khanna’s 10th wedding anniversary which was held over the weekend in Mumbai.

The buzz is that right from the time the two entered the plush Juhu home of the Kumar’s they were seen in complete harmony with each other as a cozy twosome.

Both were just very passionately involved with each other and danced to their hearts content quite oblivious about what people would think. Thus, the normally publicity shy and coy couple had suddenly decided to give everyone a pleasant surprise by just coming out bold about what exactly they felt for each other.

So, just how long have the two been in the relationship? If rumors are to be believed then it has been for the past eight years or so. Well, what about Jacqueline? What about the rumors about her and Riteish as a couple? Now that was all speculation going on, that’s about it!

Now since Ritiesh and Genelia have gone quite bold over their relationship, rumors are that they would soon go in for tying the knot too. Seems like Bollywood is all out to party this year!

John-Bipasha relationship hits a rough patch

John-Bipasha relationship hits a rough patchIt may be the end of the road for the John Abraham and Bipasha Basu couple

There's buzz about Bipasha Basu and beau John Abraham's current state of affairs.

Though it is not the first time that there is speculation about their relationship hitting a rough patch, what lends credence to the rumours is the fact that the couple has not been spotted together in public for an extremely long time.

While Bips has been maintaining a low profile of late. John Abraham has been only making public appearances for events he endorses.

Signs of boredom

Says a source, "They have known each other for over eight years now. But their differences seem to be increasing over time.

There seems to be signs of boredom and things are heading for a dead end. Buzz doing the B-Town rounds is that the two don't seem interested in each other."

Akele akele

Adds the source, "Bipasha attended Hrithik Roshan's recent birthday bash solo. She was keen that John accompany her but he preferred to skip it.

The duo has also been doing solo endorsements of late while other B-Town couples are being offered joint deals."

Used to this

Bipasha however maintains, "I am used to this now. Both of us have been busy so we have not been seen in public. I was travelling for work and he's been shooting for Vipul Shah's film. All going good!"

But the source adds, "Both have been even busier earlier and have took time out for each other. This is no longer the case."

In the past, there has been speculation about cracks in the John-Bips rishta...

When intimate pictures of Cristiano Ronaldo and Bipasha Basu did the rounds in 2007. The footballer had met Bips at the 'Seven Wonders Of The World' show in Lisbon, Portugal. The actress had claimed that those pictures were taken at an 'opportune' moment.

When B-Town was abuzz with the news that Saif Ali Khan, post his break-up with Rosa Catalono, had shown keen interest in Bips during the shoot of Race. He had also started gymming with her!

When John Abraham was smitten by Vidya Balan, his Salaam-e-Ishq co-star.

During the promotion of their film Goal in Cannes, Bipasha had supposedly commented that she is single.

When there was buzz that Bips was bonding with her Jism co-star Dino Morea again.

Neetu Chandra denies going panty-less!

Neetu Chandra denies going panty-less!Denying reports published by a popular website, claiming that Bollywood actress Neetu Chandra did a Yana Gupta and went commando at an event this week, her publicist Dale Bhagwagar said, “Neetu Chandra is a girl with dignity and there has been no slip like this.”

The website had claimed that Neetu replicated Yana Gupta’s panty-less act and said that it seemed to be “intentional and she might have followed it, after seeing what Yana Gupta has achieved doing the same.”

But her publicist dismissed the report as a case of misreporting. “Neetu does not need to resort to any such thing for publicity.

In fact, she was planning to initiate legal action on the website and was in the process of approaching the National Commission of Women (NCW) in New Delhi, when the site tendered an unconditional apology for the news. So the matter stands closed.”

What can we say but… all is well that ends well.

Abhay, Emraan together in Dibakar Banerjee's Shanghai

Abhay, Emraan together in Dibakar Banerjee`s ShanghaiActors Abhay Deol and Emraan Hashmi have teamed up together for the first time for director Dibakar Banerjee's film "Shanghai".

Produced by PVR Pictures, the movie is the official Hindi adaptation of a political thriller by Greek novelist Vassilis Vassilikos, who wrote about the real-life assassination of a dynamic politician.

The movie has been adapted by Dibakar and his team to the Indian context.

Dibakar, known for his films like "Khosla Ka Ghosla" and "Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye", said the film's two leading actors would be seen donning new reel life avatars, something they haven't done before.

"I'm looking forward to breaking some presumptions with this film. I love the way some people stereotype the dark, kissy, negative bond side of Emraan in his films," Dibakar said in a statement here Wednesday.

"Well this film is going to see him go right into the heat and dust of a hellish Indian small town and its deadly politics. No leather jackets, suave bars and foreign locales."

"Abhay was never seen like this before - in a negative, cold, almost vicious character. Imagine Abhay being the establishment instead of fighting it. He looks at you through his glasses, wearing his stiff shirt and you wonder what's on his mind," he added.

PVR President Kamal Gianchandani is also excited about the project. He said: "To see the two lead characters being brought to life by actors of such contrasting, but equally versatile talent is great."

"Casting Emraan and Abhay in the film was first and foremost a creative decision, but as a producer I am thrilled that it will help to bring to this gripping film audiences from across the spectrum," he added.

After 10 years Farah Khan is back with Aamir again

After 10 years Farah Khan is back with Aamir againBy Subhash K Jha

Now that Tees Maar Khan is over and done with Farah Khan is all set indulge in her first love, choreography. She's been asked by Aamir Khan to choreograph a song for Delhi Belly a film that for all practical purposes director Abhinay Deo completed a year ago.

But then Aamir has his own unique method of editing packaging and marketing his productions. That Delhi Belly is being given a touch of Farah Khan's choreographic magic would surprise many, and most certainly Abhinay Deo.

Now that his wife Kiran Rao's directorial debut Dhobi Ghat is on releaseAamir Khan's attention is now turning towards the post-production work of his next release Delhi Belly.A project as special to Aamir as Dhobi Ghat since it stars his nephew Imran Khan. The quirky film about a prodigal's return to the Capital has been described as a sex comedy.

Delhi Belly was completed by Abhinay Deo last year. Deo then moved on to his next project Game for producers Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani, leaving the fate of Delhi Belly in his enormously capable producer's hands.

The song choreographed by Farah Khan in Delhi Belly would be filmed on Imran Khan. Apparently Aamir wants the same feeling of youthful vibrancy in it that Farah had created for Aamir in the Pehla nasha number in Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar.

Pehla nasha was the first song that Farha ever choreographed. After Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar she has choreographed only twice for Aamir, in Sarfarosh and Dil Chahta Hai.

Confirming her professional reunion with Aamir after ten years Farah says, “Yes next month I'm doing a song for Aamir's Delhi Belly because he has asked me to. I am meeting him this week to decide everything.”

So does this mean Farah is returning to choreography in a big way?

Retorts Farah, “Not at all!I don't actively do choreography any more. Only a song here or there for friends. Besides Aamir' song I will be doing the Housefull numbers for my brother Sajid and of course my husband Shirish Kunder's Joker. That's it for now. No more choreography this year. I'm busy writing my next script.”
